Oktoberfest Brisbane 2019 – Australia’s largest German festival

More than 40,000 people are expected to descend on the Brisbane Showgrounds this year as Australia’s largest German festival Oktoberfest Brisbane returns from Oktober 11 – 13 and 18 – 20.

Culture-seeking enthusiasts from across Queensland and beyond will travel to the iconic festival to don their Dirndl and Lederhosen and indulge in a fun-filled feast of authentic German foods and traditional entertainment.

German-Australian husband and wife duo and event directors Kim and Boris Zoulek said Oktoberfest Brisbane brings to life the rich cultural heritage at the heart of Munich’s famous Oktoberfest and other folk festivals across Germany.

“Everywhere you look, from the four kilometres of blue and white ceiling fabric, wooden flooring and lighting fixtures in the main Oktoberfest Tent, through to the live band we fly out from Bavaria every year and the selection of food vendors, we place enormous emphasis on getting the festival feeling right,” Boris says.

“There are so many beautiful things, delicious things, and fun things in German culture – and the beer is part of that – and when you put people in an environment that has been carefully created with all of them, the atmosphere is electric and people really embrace their inner German.”

Oktoberfest Brisbane’s German culinary offering is unrivalled in Australia with around 10,000 sausages and 6000 pretzels enjoyed each weekend at the festival along with a raft of traditional sweets like Black Forest cake and Appel Strudel for those with a sweeter tooth.

Saturdays even offer the chance to start the day with a Weißwurst Frühstück {Bavarian breakfast} complete with Weißwurst {white veal sausages}, freshly baked Brezn and a Weissbier {wheat beer} to wash it all down. You may also spot Kim and Boris who enjoy the tradition each year.

Regulars at Oktoberfest Brisbane will return for the atmosphere alone, as the Bavarian Oompah Band ‘Münchner Buam’ pumps the lifeblood throughout the festival with a mix of traditional folk songs and crowd-favourite sing-a-longs.

Surrounded by food stalls, carnival rides and roving entertainment, the outdoor Munich Biergarten offers the perfect place to relax and indulge in the sounds, smells and tastes of a traditional German festival as the Brisbane Showgrounds transforms into a mini Bavaria.

The Kinderzone will again offer plenty of fun for the little ones and ample seating and shade for when they are tuckered out from the rides which are free on Sundays. Autoshow on the final Sunday will also return with a display of vintage, classic and late model German marques.

Kim encouraged people to come along to Oktoberfest Brisbane and see first- hand why the festival was a highlight on the city’s major events calendar.

“It’s about being with friends and family, enjoying the moment, the food and where you are. It’s all of those things together and there is nowhere else you can experience it in Australia except for when October rolls around in Brisbane,” she says.

“Queensland has an incredibly rich German community and every year the family of suppliers, vendors and support staff behind the festival grows stronger and their passion is reflected in what people experience when they walk through the gates.”

Star operators shine at ARAMA’s inaugural TOP Awards

The best in the Management Rights industry were this week recognised by their peers at the Australian Resident Accommodation Managers Association’s (ARAMA) inaugural TOP Awards 2019 in Brisbane.

Husband and wife duo Geoff and Tamara Hussin from Ivory Palms Resort in Noosaville, Sunshine Coast took out the first of the two top gongs, Resident Manager of the Year Award for Short Stay accommodation, while Michael Mitchell from Moda Melton in Nundah, Brisbane won the Long Stay category.

With more than 150 industry participants in attendance, the awards recognised the variety of stakeholders instrumental to the strength and success of the management rights industry which generates $55.5 billion to the Australian economy annually.

ARAMA CEO Trevor Rawnsley said the initiative highlighted the professional skills, experience and opportunities within the management rights industry as well as its economic significance.  

“Around 38,000 people stay in resident managed accommodation in Australia daily and there is a thriving industry underpinning everything from the upkeep of properties to guest satisfaction,” Mr Rawnsley says.

“Our inaugural Resident Managers of the Year have demonstrated the highest professional standards of management rights operators and we hope more people are encouraged by their success to participate in the industry.”

World record attempt makes national news headlines

There was superb media support for the the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club world record attempt for the longest line of RVs in Barcaldine this month.

With a PR campaign targeting both state and national media, highlights included making national news headlines via 7 News (story below), ABC News and 9 News. The Courier-Mail and regional newspapers also followed the feat closely.

Aussies set to break world RV record

Australian RV enthusiasts are gathering in outback Queensland this month ready to tackle a world record dating back 16 years for the longest line of motorhomes, caravans, campervans and fifth-wheelers.

Barcaldine will host the attempt to topple over the current Guinness World Record, which was set in June 2003 when 672 moving camping vehicles (RVs) were recorded in Canelli, Italy.

The Australian Motorhoming Lions Club (AMLC), which has organised the event with Barcaldine Regional Council, expects Australia’s strong travelling fraternity will show up in large numbers, with 850 RVs already registered to participate in the feat.

“At this stage we are looking at getting at least 200 more than Italy with people coming from everywhere, from all states and territories, and even from New Zealand,” says AMLC president Len Waddington.

“You don’t have to own one of these vehicles to get involved in the event - you can hire it or borrow it and come along and have a lot of fun over the five days.”

Activities kick off on May 23 with the event aiming to boost visitation and expenditure in drought affected towns in and around Barcaldine. All proceeds from the event will also be donated to the local community.
